Texas: Mis-Education, American style

Ever since I can remember in my adult years, American students have come near the bottom of the list when compared to students world-wide.

Student scores have come below students from countries that make you scratch your head and to my knowledge, America has never been in the over-all top five levels on the lists.

Most concerned citizens languish over the results and I have noticed the list is no longer readily available as in the past.

I am mindful hearing from people who have visited other countries saying citizens of that country know more about America than they do.

While I do not know if school systems can reject certain text book publications, it is going to be interesting seeing how individual school systems deal with the Social Studies Curriculum recently approved by the Texas Schools Board of Education.

As the article below indicates, it appears America will continue placing our students and their parents in embarrassing situations both locally and world-wide, and with all that is said and done, never ready for prime-time.

As the famous boxing manager would say, “Only in America”. Sad.

Texas SBOE passes new curriculum UPDATED
by DRo
Excerpt:
The Texas SBOE Theocrats won. This is a sad day for children. The vote for the high school standards broke along party lines, with Republican supporting them and all Democrats voting no.

And
Controversy-wracked social studies standards won approval Friday as the State Board of Education voted 9-5 for the curriculum that will shape history books for Texas public schools. Angry minority members of the board reacted harshly against the standards, which they claim glorify white America’s role in history while avoiding the issues of racial discrimination.

Comment…
Contact your own school board (4+ / 0-)
and make sure they have nothing to do with purchasing these textbooks.
They may want to consider moving towards e-books.  Textbook companies can make changes to an electronic version at less cost.  It could be a viable option for small school districts.

Fried chicken or Bar-B-Q steak

In my opinion, there are two issues that can always make America drop dead in its tracks. Everything is put on “pause” and for hours on end we holds hands singing, “Ol’ Black Joe” or “If I had a hammer!”

If the Oligarchy wants us to re-visit racial issues, they have us singing “Ol’ Black Joe” and if they want us to re-visit abortion issues, they just as energetically conduct us in singing “If I had a hammer”.

It’s always one song or the other.

With both issues being long ago “Settled law”, our good ol’ Oligarchy find them ever so useful to bring out of the closet, dust them off and present them as “New and improved”.

And we sing and sing. Boy, do we sing! We even manage to work in a few soloist from time to time.

Did the man really say, “Bamboozled”?
As always,

P.S. Wait until they make us all sing and dance The Hora!

“Hello, Bill? This is Blanche.”

-Yes Blanche, what’s up?

- I need you!

-Yes, I know. Halter, right?

- Yes. Halter.

-Do you know…

-Yes!! (clears throat) Yes, I know. I’ll pay you.

- Well, I think something can be arranged.

- Good! I’ll call your agent first thing in the morning.

- You know, this is funny. Just a few minutes ago someone called and thought I was Rahm and wanted to speak to the President.

-Yeah? Uh, imagine that. Somebody must be confused.

- ...or desperate. And yesterday, someone called and thought I was Biden.

- I’ll call your agent in the morning. Good night, Bill, and I hope you don’t get anymore of those crazy calls.

- Somehow or another, I don’t think I will. Gut feeling. Good night, Blanche. See you soon.

Rachel goes weirdo with Rand Paul

It was no fun watching Sen. elect Rand Paul brilliantly defending himself on the Rachel Maddow Show this evening.

Rachel asked Mr. Paul if he would have voted for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. I had to pinch myself to see if she was serious and it turned out that yes, she was serious. She wanted to know if he approved of Blacks eating at a Woolworth lunch counter so many decades ago. She wanted him to answer questions regarding public accommodations for Blacks, ending her interview saying that these questions are going to plague him during his continued candidacy to becoming a U.S. Senator.

If Mr. Paul is going to be plagued with questions regarding the Civil Rights Act, the threshold doesn’t make sense to me in the year of our Lord, 2010. If Rachel was saying Mr. Paul is a racist and we should not have racist people in our Congress, in my opinion her exposure of Mr. Paul was an epic fail and a waste of air-time!

Surely Rachel did not feel she was doing this interview to enlighten us Blacks. If so, why? Most Black Democrats would not vote for a Republican anyway. Was this rendezvous tonight supposed to send some sort of "heads-up" message to Pres. Obama? He’s used to this shit just like the rest of us Blacks. I repeat I am baffled by the incident.

Rachel has to know the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had, as its grandparents, The Dread Scott Decision (1857), Plessy Vs. Ferguson (1896), and Brown Vs. Board of Education (1954). The Civil Rights Act did not materialize out of thin air. It had to be won having “Legal precedences” to build upon!

Why find a reason to fight those battles again with Mr. Paul or anybody else? I can not embrace the “bottom line”. With so many questions Rachel could have asked Mr. Paul regarding contemporary issues, I can only conclude the choice was not her own. There was someone behind the curtain on this one. I find comfort in those thoughts. After all that’s said and done, Rachel is somebodys’ employee.

Ethereal TeaParty in Kentucky

Whether you consider them “A celestial body” or “Rugged Rough Riders”, they missed a golden opportunity to advance their cause last night with the successful win of Rand Pauls’ candidacy for the U.S. Senate.

In my opinion, the spokesperson for the Kentucky chapter of the TeaBaggers should have been on stage, named and personally thanked by Rand Paul during his acceptance speech.

And by now, the spokesperson of the party should have had press releases. He should be espousing efforts of the party including future plans for Rand Paul. And finally, in full regalia or not, some of the TeaBaggers should have been recorded registering their glee. Instead, we get nothing! Nada! Zilt!

These “oversights” happen when you have incompetent reporters reporting a story and if that is not the case, I am therefore led to believe there is NO TEAPARTY MOVEMENT in Kentucky, or at least not one of note; only figments of the medias’ surreptitious imagination with persistent efforts to keep a Boogeyman lurking around in the wings.

The media would have us believing a body of non-identifiable leaderless people pulled off one of the most significant elections to date. Yeah! Right! In my opinion, and for all I know, it was either OJ from his prison cell or the Blacks of Kentucky pulling off this stunning caper.

The media wants that fact to remain a secret so, hush! Mum's the word! Just be still! (Smile)

Incumbents and “Short memory” myth

If ever I wanted to drive a stake through the heart of a myth it is this one: “The American public has a short memory!” That one really raises the fur around my neck.

In the old days, traditional media told us only what traditional media wanted us to know. It was manipulating stories with just enough information to be vague and then dropping the story pandering to the myth the public has short memories. I note their justification was rampant and continues to exist in some corners of the Village.

And so we move on to Tuesdays’ elections. Many incumbents think we either did not notice or have forgotten how they stood in the middle of the world stage shamelessly exposing their hind-parts, including the tracks on their drawers for all to see. Most all of them did it with no regrets. Many felt their horrible behavior was “cute” or "honorable" and needed to be executed for whatever reason.

Then comes election time when they want to be re-elected. More then likely their hometown newspaper would support them and they hire a PR firm to place a halo above their heads. That is well and good. The incumbent can fold his arms and stick out his chest, hopefully for the last time. I can't wait until Wednesday, the day after elections.

Enter the political bloggers; the ones media wants to believe are afflicted with Alzheimers’ disease and just want something to do to occupy our minds. (Smile)

There is hardly an hour passes a diary does not appear on Dkos regarding important information about incumbents who are up for re-election, thereby dispelling the “Short memory” myth. The myth is dead! Done! Toast, already! Let it go!
