Could ten million dollars influence my vote?

I imagine a lot of people  would show up at your front door if you announced your willingness to spend ten million dollars to support a political  candidate. Human nature being what it is, they would work at your pleasure, doing and saying things beyond your wildest dreams supporting your ten million dollar aspirations.

- Mr. Adelson, my name is Hill and have I got a deal for you! With my ties to companies making commercials, you can sit back and relax. Here’s the deal. I can make 30 second commercials from now until kingdom comes and get them on every TV network in the country. I can get every TV host to mention the latest commercial we make and show the commercial on his or her show. I  can get all of them to do it.

-You can do that?

- I’ve  got connections. I can do that and more. I’ll put the word out that through your generosity you would make generous contributions to newspapers and blogs, websites,  polling services, anything whatever that supports your candidate and discredits  the President. They are to do it at every possible turn he makes, anytime, anywhere.

-You can do that??

-As soon as you put the funds in my account.

-How much would it cost me?

-Ten million dollars and of course (ahem) that includes my fees. Do we have a deal?

-What if Obama wins?

-Think positive, Mr. Adelson, think positive, man.

-Sold! Where do I sign?

-(Both sing and dance) “Happy days are here again…..”

On hiring teachers, policemen and firemen

There are frantic cries to pass bills awarding stimulus money to states enabling them to hire more teachers, policemen and firemen in what is referred to as “public service worker jobs”.

It is my understanding that stimulus money is finite and when the designated funds are depleted, the state will have all of those newly hired salaried workers on its hands it would have to deal with. There would be pension funds to continue paying into, single and family health care plans to sustain along with other employment related issues.

It should be further noted that those same workers may now be locked into and protected by unions and other organizations who are depending on the workers to pay their organizational dues and will vigorously fight for their continued employment.

This dilemma could cause big financial concerns for the state and its legislators. I understand this is the reason some states do not want stimulus money of any kind arguing the point, in many instances, its hiring practices are  local issues.

Although there maybe other reasons, this is the one I know about due to a situation that came up during the Clinton Administration with the hiring of policemen.

Woodson and Langston Hughes

Could I be called lazy if I take my own sweet time reading the last chapter of a novel? Would some call me a procrastinator for such behavior or would some just lament what they would consider my slow reading skills? The real reason is, as my sister-in-law would off’time say, “I does not know”.

The problem is reading “Not without laughter”, the only novel written by the famous poet Langston Hughes. This is my second reading of the novel and I am just as engaged as I was the first time reading it, perhaps more so. I note there is less writing in the margin of pages which I can not account for. Perhaps it is a story for another time.

What happened to me was after reading a few pages of Mr. Hughes’ novel, the narrative became a continuation of the thesis “The Mis-education of the Negro” written by Dr. Carter G. Woodson. In my opinion, Mr. Hughes has written a sequel to The Mis-education and for some un-explainable reason, I don’t want to leave either of them. I think the two readings go together like peaches and cream and I don’t want to say I am finished with things they wrote about  and  become confused again as to what has happened to us as a race. I don’t want to once again face the meanness of whites that has now gone global. Reading about their treatment of us Blacks is one thing but confronting it day-to-day is another can of worms.

Sooner or later, maybe this evening or the evening after,  I will re-read the last pages of “Not without laughter” and realize once again we now have our first Black President and the way he is being treated. That’s reality. (Sigh)
