2010: “Making beds!” (UpdateX2)

With much reading of late as to what lie ahead in 2010 on the political scene, my Hiney Shiney is telling me there will be lots of bed making. Making beds to lie in, sit on, cry on or screw on or whatever, in any case, it will be a bed methodically prepared by its potential occupant with full knowledge of accepting the consequences of whatever happens when it is used. One can never be absolutely confident as to how one will sleep on a given night. “A bed is a bed is a bed!” would be the cry of reality and the other reality would be, “If it is your bed, you have to eventually lie in it and deal with it!”

My Hiney Shiney tells me in 2010 there will not be the mass demonstrations and blood curdling events to satisfy the thirsty oligarchy. The only public display of civil disobedience for their TV cameras to chronicle and manipulate will be the ones they themselves will have successfully and surgically manipulated. The oligarchy will not be able to produce such manipulation upon the more than ever determined bed makers and that will bother them and they will spend lots of money in response.

With the bottom sheet flying across the bed, with each tucking of the corners and with each top sheet thrown and with each fluffed pillow placed underneath more bedding, the bed maker will be making decisions; long and thoughtful ones.

Decisions like whether to canvas for the upcoming mid-term elections; what message would be the strongest to send to Pres. Obama and Rahm Emanuel; whether or not the positives outweigh the negatives with the local officials on the ballot or even bother to vote at all; whether to do the phone banks again this year or whether to just say “Fuck it!”

Finally, my Hiney Shiney is telling me there are those who have already started making their beds. A “jump-start” so to speak and you, as the bed maker, are very aware whatever your decision, this bed you are preparing is the one you will have to lie in on Tuesday night, November 2, 2010 and beyond.
As always,
BB
P.S. As a disclaimer, I must confess my Hiney Shiney is not infallible. It's gotten kind'a old. (Smile)

(Update) Fool’s Gold? This is but one more issue to ponder.
BREAKING: Dems "Almost Certain" to Bypass Formal Conference

Comment:
 What this means (10+ / 0-)
is that the House bill gets scrapped completely and the Senate bill gets shoved through the House.  It means that Nancy Pelosi thoroughly caved in.
The idea that it gets past the GOP somehow is simply ridiculous.  They only have 40 votes.  That's not enough to filibuster.
This is a wholesale sell out by the Democrats.  And remember how your president said that we shouldn't make a fuss -- that he would step in at conference time and assert his authority?
Well guess what?  No conference time.
Completely and thoroughly sold out, no matter how much the minions try to spin it.

And
The Perils of Passivity
By DAVID MICHAEL GREEN
Excerpt:
This is precisely where we are now.  It absolutely defies the imagination that the Republican Party hasn’t been sentenced to death by hanging, drawing and quartering after the crimes of the last decade.  But no, remarkably, they are in the midst of an amazing revitalization now, courtesy of their aggressive deceits and the utter capitulation of the party nominally in charge.

And
There are three things that Democrats absolutely don’t understand about the notion of assertive leadership. First, if you don’t do it, you won’t achieve anything. The American political system, as created by the Founders, is designed to produce utter stasis, the only exception being, well, exceptional moments. Second, no one will follow you, if you don’t lead. Leadership is crucial to substantive achievements, but it also has its own intrinsic rewards. People want to be led, and they want to believe in their leaders. Indeed, they will follow strong leaders, like Ronald Reagan for example, even when they disagree with their politics. On the other hand, if you project fecklessness, they will tend to despise you, sometimes even though they like your ideas.

American Hyperbole

So a star (America) has reached middle age by fusing hydrogen (lies and deceit) into helium (truism). Then what happens? Once a star (America) has run out of usable hydrogen (lies and deceit) that it can convert into helium, (truism) a star then takes one of several paths.
And
Once it has finished its active phase (hydrogen to helium), it becomes a white dwarf. (Zenith fail)
And
A white dwarf can come about in one of two ways; first, if the star is very small, electron degeneracy pressure simply stops the collapse of the star, it is out of hydrogen, and it becomes a white dwarf. Secondly, and more commonly, the core of the star can still be surrounded by some layers of hydrogen, which continue to fuse and cause the star to expand, becoming a red giant. (Non-star)

Ah, the ways of the universe! But wait! America is in denial. I note how it has to beat up on small countries, i.e., Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran and now Yemen to prove its relevancy. If it were not for poor people of color in the world, what on earth would America do? I also note a drowning man grabbing hold of anything to stay afloat.
Fighting for the dignity of my Ancestors,
God bless Bill Gates, WPFW, C-SPAN and the spirits of the unborn for the help,

….and still we advanced as a country. Yes? No? (Update)

I was anxiously waiting to catch somebody’s wave lengths regarding the accomplishments of these past ten years. As this decade comes to a close, we are already hearing about the most stupid remarks of the decade, the most popular and un-popular persons, the funniest of people and other such silly nonsense which, I admit, has a place in a society such as the one developed for and by us. (Smile)

However, I await with glee the end of decade documentary telling us how many electrical and mechanical engineers graduated from college during the past decade; how many start-up new businesses there were and in what areas of the country; how many new voters were added to the voter role; how many new cultural centers were built and how much the people are enjoying them; how many new boy and girl scouts were enrolled and how their summer programs advanced throughout the decade; the positive condition of the Peace Corp; the Nobel Peace Prize and categories we contributed to; popular names for babies during the decade; how many people took cruises; who won the Metropolitan Opera and Van Cliburn auditions; author of the year; etc., etc., etc., (Sigh)
The Big Zero
By PAUL KRUGMAN
Excerpt:
But from an economic point of view, I’d suggest that we call the decade past the Big Zero. It was a decade in which nothing good happened, and none of the optimistic things we were supposed to believe turned out to be true.

And
Let me quote from a speech that Lawrence Summers, then deputy Treasury secretary (and now the Obama administration’s top economist), gave in 1999. “If you ask why the American financial system succeeds,” he said, “at least my reading of the history would be that there is no innovation more important than that of generally accepted accounting principles: it means that every investor gets to see information presented on a comparable basis; that there is discipline on company managements in the way they report and monitor their activities.” And he went on to declare that there is “an ongoing process that really is what makes our capital market work and work as stably as it does.”

America the Traumatized: How 13 Events of the Decade Made Us the PTSD Nation
Wednesday 30 December 2009
Excerpt:
History being history, the story of the millennial decade is, in many ways, about the very same things that characterized the decades that ushered it in: racial strife, the renegotiation of gender roles, our nation's place in the world, declining economic fortunes, ugly wars and unconstitutional actions by the government. But this decade offered one critical difference; the disorderly world was no longer contained within a glass tube in a wood-paneled bunker. It sneaked up behind us and whacked us in the head.

BREAKING: Rush Limbaugh listed in serious condition at HI hospital (UPDATE 8X)
by msblucow
Excerpt:
HONOLULU -- Conservative radio talk host Rush Limbaugh was rushed to a Honolulu hospital on Wednesday afternoon with chest pains, sources told KITV.
Paramedics responded to the call at 2:41 p.m. at the Kahala Hotel and Resort.
Limbaugh suffered from chest pains, sources said. Paramedics treated him and took him to Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.
He was seen golfing at Waialae Country Club earlier this week. The country club is next to the Kahala Hotel and Resort.
The radio show host had been in the islands during the holidays. Coincidentally, his visit comes at a time when two of the nation's most powerful Democrats, President Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, are also staying in Hawaii.

As one gets older, one of our greatest fears is not to get sick and die alone. For those of us as rich and famous as is the good Mr. Rush Limbaugh, such thoughts would surely be disquieting, perhaps sending up a red flag or two.

Further, for those of us after working as hard as Rush and after making many sacrifices and friends to not have anyone around us when our time comes or almost comes has to be a bit unsettling if not downright embarrassing.

The enclosed article does not identify a 911 call, who made the call and who was in attendance when the paramedics arrived.

This episode with Rush makes me mindful of the inglorious attention to the illness and death of columnist Robert “Bob” Novak. Good manners prevents me from publicly recording further thoughts on this episode with Rush other then the fact I hope he will at least get some flowers from Dick Cheney and his daughter Liz. I hope the local florist is swamped with orders. I truly fell sorry for Rush. Honestly!

Is Obama Rahm’s lap poodle?

Rahm Emanuel always manages to get Pres. Obama in front of a microphone to talk about everything from Mrs. O’Leary’s cow to episodes of Road Runner even when he is supposed to be vacationing.

HCR: Doom $ Gloom

I have concluded it is virtually impossible to write anything regarding the HealthCare Reform Bill now looming in Congress going in for mediation or whatever it is called.

Every time I read a writer’s interpretation of some parts of the bill, it is laden with suggestions someone or some group could be going to court regarding its legality. From the jump, I hear there is going to be a court case regarding the state of Nevada getting 100% Medicare funding. Now Constitutional Lawyers all over the U.S. can tap into state’s treasuries to further enrich their law firms with each and every part of the HealthCare Reform Bill they figure they can squeeze a dollar from.

Law suites will go on and on, states will get brooker and brooker, Constitutional Lawyers will ware perpetual $miles into every courtroom in America and Social Workers and their healthcare provider contacts will be all aflutter with twisted britches.

Mr. "Hank" Paulson asked for -demanded?- and got seven hundred billion dollars from our treasury with his request for said amount written on two and one half sheets of paper with no threats of law suites. It is my understanding the HealthCare Bill has over twenty one hundred pages and counting.

When Pres. Obama and Company would not let a group representing the need for a Public Option be seated and heard at the first meeting breaking open plans for the HealthCare Reform Bill, there were some arrests and so the whole procedure started off wrong. I am a firm believer that says if you start off wrong, you will surely end up wrong. I have never seen it to fail! I am mindful of the legitimate delegation of Ms. Fannie Lou Hamer not being seated at a Democratic Convention so many years ago and the kindness of other delegates to yield their seats to them. If I remember correctly, there were also arrests. I am also mindful it was *Republicans who helped pass the 1965 Civil Rights Bill with many a reluctant Democrat voting against it.

The height of cruelty would be to start programs under the HealthCare Reform Bill and having to stop them due to the fact their legitimacy is being challenged in court. “To have loved and lost” is a horrible condition to be in.

*Voting Rights Act
1965
Few talk about the positive contributions Republicans made in passing the Civil Rights Act under a Democratic President and Congress.
The Senate never had been able to muster enough votes to cut off a filibuster on a Civil Rights Bill. The final count showed 44 Democrats and 27 Republicans voting to close off debate, with 23 Democrats and only 6 Republicans opposed. The formal Senate vote on the bill took place on June 19, 1964. It passed overwhelmingly, 73-27.
In the final house passage of the bill on August 3, 1965, the breakdown was 217 Democrats and 111 Republicans voting in favor versus 54 Southern Democrats and 120 Republicans voting against. The final Senate vote on August 4 was 49 Democrats and 30 Republicans in favor, one Republican and 17 Democrats opposed, Robert Byrd of West Virginia and 16 Southern Democrats. Southern Democrats who voted in favor of the bill on August 4 were Senators Albert A. Gore (who had originally voted against the Voting Rights Act in 1964) and Ross Bass from Tennessee, Mike Monroney and Fred R. Harris from Oklahoma and Ralph W. Yarborough from Texas. [3]

Nominate diarist “desmoinesden” as Obama speech writer

In my opinion, the crisp, clear writing and organization skills of diarist desmoinesden would go a long way in helping President Obama and Company in 2010 and 2012 if they would hire him/her. If not, at least an interview to asses potentials. The ol’ Negro spiritual says, “Sinner, please don’t let this harvest pass!”

An early look at next year's campaign messages on health care
by desmoinesdem
Excerpt:
Next year, Democrats will need to make the case that health insurance reform is helping millions of people without forcing extra costs on Americans. Senator Harkin's office listed some of the bill's "immediate benefits" in a December 24 press release:
