*Ted Williams: Americas’ newest can of worms
In my opinion, nothing cleans up the speech of Blacks as the conquering of the ‘th’ sound. I have seen people open up a new vista of comprehension in a matter of minutes once the problem has been identified and a few exercises later with the help of a tape recorder does the trick.
I was not surprised when white boy Eminen was named “Rap Artist of the 20th century” by his mostly Black peers. It was a hard pill to swallow but here again it was, in my opinion, due to the ‘th’ sound, the concrete pillar of many English words ie., the, this, that, those, together.
I know it is fact Germans have problems with the ‘W’ sound substituting the ‘V’ sound (unvelcome) in its stead and the Chinese have problems with the ‘R’ hence ‘Shlimp flied lice’.
Moving forward, Dr. Carter G. Woodson of “Mis-Education of the Negro” fame encouraged all Negroes circa 1930 seeking a musical career to get professional help from a qualified music teacher. He had knowledge that a music teacher not only would teach appropriate tone productions but the words that accompanied them to get maximized effect. It‘s that “When in Rome” thing. I am of the school that says speech is also music.
I would always tells my music student “When your parents come to our concerts and can not understand what you are singing, you are wasting their time!”
In reference to the title of my post:
There are hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Blacks having conquered the ‘th’ sound who have been relegated to the low levels or trash bins of their professions by influential members of the dominant group. I will concede the point that like *Mr. Ted Williams, there has to be a significant intellectual component. And I want to note most emphatically the fact Mr. Williams went to a school with competent teachers to hone (sharpen) his communication skills and, I must add again that the intellectual discipline of Mr. Williams was the sturdy, ever focused under-current! We can’t all be winners and taking off your clothing or pulling on your private parts is of little avail. You simply Kan’t sing. Deal wif it!(Smile)
Fighting for the dignity of my Ancestors,
God bless Bill Gates, WPFW, C-SPAN and the spirits of the unborn for the help,
BB
P.S. I note the successes of ‘singers’ who can not sing a lick but you can understand every word they say. For physical reasons, the converse is also possible re: Harry Balafonte.

A can of worms is a complex, troublesome situation arising when a decision or action produces considerable subsequent problems.

And/Or
Metaphorically speaking, to open a can of worms means to inadvertently create numerous new problems while trying to solve one. Experts disagree on the origin of the phrase, but it is generally believed to be a Canadian or American metaphor coined sometime in the 1950s. Bait stores routinely sold cans of worms and other popular live baits to fishermen, who often discovered how easy it was to open a can of worms and how difficult it was to close one. Once the worms discovered an opportunity to escape, it became nearly impossible to keep them contained.
